Two young people drown at Els Vivers on a red-flag day

Guardamar del Segura has experienced tragic days along its coastline after two 25-year-olds died at Els Vivers beach, where a red flag was flying because of rough seas and strong currents.

The victims were a Ukrainian-born couple who lived in Poland and were visiting friends in the town. The incident happened when one of the young women had difficulty getting out of the water and her partner went in to try to help her. Both were swept out to sea.

Emergency services attended the scene and performed resuscitation, but were unable to save them. The Guardia Civil is investigating the incident.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers posed by currents at some of Guardamar’s beaches, particularly on red-flag days, when swimming is prohibited.

Separately, there are reports of another possible death at La Roqueta days earlier, although this needs official confirmation before it can be treated as established.
